In 1941 Carl Raswan wrote the book, "Drinkers of the Wind. It is a story of high adventure: the kind of adventure that almost every boy or girl would love to have lived. What makes this story particularly exciting is that it actually happened to Carl Raswan. Drinkers of the Wind tells how Carl became the friend of the wandering tribesmen of the Arabian desert, lived among them as a blood brother, and finally found the horse of his dreams. O.T. Drkumo RSI is line bred from the blood of those, Carl Raswan's Drinkers of the Wind.

Through a series of "fairyland" events, we became acquainted with Richard Pritzlaff who lives at Rancho San Ignacio (RSI), in New Mexico. Richard through Carl Raswan and General Tibor von Pettko Szandtner, head of Egypt's Royal Agricultural Society (RAS), made the second major importation of Abbas Pasha / Ali Pasha Sherif blood to the United States in 1958. Pritzlaff had also added to his importations the 66% Abbas Pasha blood of Dr. John Doyle's Ghadaf (sire of Linda Tellington's Bint Gulida) to form the framework known as the "Pritzlaff Egyptians." (O.T. Drkumo looks very much like Ghadaf.) Getting to know this phenomenon of the Arabian breeders has been a privilege, but more importantly we have developed a respected working relationship with Richard, now 94, since for those who know him realize that he can be a most challenging undertaking.

In order to produce world class endurance horses Sharon and I wanted to prove mares that could run up front, carry weight, win and stay sound for thousands of miles. This was accomplished most notably with OT Djerada Moniet (Grasshopper) the 1992 and 1993 AERC Best Condition National Champion as well as 1991-92-93 Southwest Regional Champion: and OT Cassidy's Dance the 1994 AERC Best Condition National Champion, 1995 and 95 Southwest Regional Best Condition and the 1994 IAHA Top Achieving Half-Arabian mare.

Having established mares we then became involved in a stallion search that would compliment a breeding program to produce the most sound and trouble fee horses for endurance. Sharon and I agreed to work towards obtaining a stallion we would not have to make any excuses for. As Wilford and Lady Anne Blount had purchased Ali Pasha Sherif stallions in the 1890's that provided size and refinement when bred to their Crabbet mares, it was our desire to be able to do the same.

Through Richard Pritzlaff, Outlaw Trail obtained the stallions O.T. Drkumo RSI and OT Sario RSI. OT Drkumo RSI is line bred mainly from Moniet El Nefous known as "The Queen of the Nile" and Nazeer blood. We also obtained the mares Saracence RSI who produced OT Nessous RSI by Almoniet and Moniet Unity who produced OT Raji by Rajeer.

Having been a farrier for 30 years and owning horses with more than 40,000 endurance miles, it doesn't take a PhD to realize that minimizing horse's conformation and metabolic deficiencies is very important for success. Since breaking Drkumo in April of 1995 he has been nothing short of dynamic in his accomplishments. Carrying 225 lbs Drkumo finished four 50's in '95 then began a quest in '96 where he competed and completed in 30 rides; five 100's and four multiday rides for a total of 1910 miles. Drkumo is an extremely sound, clean running horse. The size and quality of his bone and hooves stand out. He does not beat himself up because he travels wide in the rear and does not forge. His business demeanor is one that focuses on drinking, eating, urinating, recovering and getting down the trail on a steady pace. He doesn't let other horses, not even his stable mate, distract his ride focus. I have never owned or ridden a horse who is more of a natural as Drkumo is with these most important endurance qualities. He rivals O.T. Cassidy's Dance for the smooth ride he gives me. The older I get, the more I appreciate this smoothness that minimizes post ride trauma on my aging body.

In natural wildlife, the fittest survive through "Natural Selection" where animals with weaknesses cannot escape their predators. The Pritzlaff Pure Egyptian blood probably comes closer to natural selection than any other horses. A notable trait is Drkumo's hooves grow more heel than toe and are extremely durable. Drkumo's clean movement coupled with his focus on maintaining metabolic functions make for an enduring Drinker of the Wind that passes these natural selection qualities on to his foals.

Drkumo's (IAHA Sweepstakes Nominated Sire) foals have been outstanding when crossed with mares outside the Pure blood. The foals exhibit hybrid vigor and refinement. His line bred foals reflect and personify the preservation of Abbas Pasha / Ali Pasha Sherif blood. It is extremely gratifying to be able to preserve these blood lines through our breeding and conditioning program for the equestrian and endurance communities of interest.

We would like to thank Richard Pritzlaff and the deceased Carl Raswan for allowing Outlaw Trail the opportunity to own these "Drinkers of the Wind"

OT DRKUMO RSI
1988 - 2005

When we first visited Rancho San Ignacio (RSI) one stallion immediately stood out, Drkumo RSI.  "Dru" exemplied the best of Kuhaylan conformation.  When turned out, Drkumo's movement took our breath away.  The ground trembled with the power and stride of his trot.  He commanded instant respect of his presence from his corral mates and from us.  He was impressive then and every day there after.

Dru was to be registered as Dykomo RSI, but Richard's handwriting was misread as his y's appeared to read as r's.  The "DY" reflected his sire Dymoniet RSI and continues to dominate in naming our line bred horses.

Drkumo produced foals taller than he, more refined foals from outside lines and all with dense bone, correct conformation, straight legs and tremendous hoof.  He hooves grew more heal than toe, one of the most favorable traits he passed to his get.

Once under saddle Dru became Crockett's back-country mount as the chosen transport of "horse back diplomacy" for his work as the District Ranger on the Camino de Real Ranger District in New Mexico.  Often Crockett would saddle Drkumo and head off to a wild fire in our "backyard", The Peco Wilderness, and arrive long before fire crews could drive to the site.  After 4 endurance performance years, we retired Drkumo to stud with our move to Escalante, Utah.

Drkumo's retirement years were spent in a huge turnout corral and many mare encounters.  He was always a picture of beauty and perfect health until the last two weeks of his life.  A sudden and alarming change in his weight resulted in his first and immediate health trip to the vet clinic.  Dru's teeth were perfect, his blood work total normal and all but his drastic loss of weight left everyone puzzled.  With no signs of colic the prognosis had to be possible ulcers.  Ulcer medication and treatment proved to be to late.  His necropsy confirmed the prognosis.

Drkumo now rests here on sacred ground on the Outlaw Roost.  His presence forever reflecting in the spirit and conformation of his get and in our hearts.

Richard Pritzlaff at Rancho San Ignacio, New Mexico

In 1947, on the advice of Carl Raswan, Richard Pritzlaff purchased from Delma Gallaher, sight-unseen, the pure Egyptian Saqlawiyah filly, Rabanna. His love and appreciation of this rare mare launched him on one of the most important and historic Arabian breeding programs ever to exist.

Again on the advice of Carl Raswan, Richard bred Rabanna to Dr. Joseph L. Doyle's aged stallion, Ghadaf, to produce a filly, Kualoha, and a colt, John Doyle, both of whom would remain in his breeding program.

Richard sought to add the most complimentary bloodlines to his small herd, and again followed Carl Raswan's advice to look to Egypt. In 1958, Richard traveled to Egypt, where with the help of General Tibor von Pettko-Szandtner, the head of the Egyptian government stud, he chose five of Egypt's best young horses, a colt and four fillies. This was the largest importation from Egypt since 1932 and the beginning of the "new Egyptians" in America.

Richard dedicated half a century to producing Arabian horses that thrived in the rocky hills of Rancho San Ignacio, his home in New Mexico, horses that could have well served the ancient Bedouins in their nomadic desert existence. Today in the United States, a small group of breeders are dedicated to preserving pure Pritzlaff horses for the future of the Arabian breed. We at God Gave Us Arabians are honored to be Pritzlaff preservationist breeders.

"We gaze upon their quiet beauty, their natural elegance, and we are captivated.
They see us softly in gentle light ... rewarding human companionship with strength, grace and intelligence. As they run through arenas and open fields, past mountains and seas, moving like the wind blows toward Heaven, we travel with then, if only in our hearts." Anonymous
